Innovative GTA Chapter Event hosted at University of Toronto C-MORE

Innovative approaches and applications to asset management was the theme of this week's GTA Chapter event. Hosted at the University of Toronto's Centre for Maintenance Optimization and Reliability Engineering (C-MORE) participants heard from a number of insightful speakers and received a tour of U of T specialized labs.

C-MORE operates within the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto, and is focused on real-world research in engineering asset management in the areas of condition-based maintenance, spares management, protective devices, maintenance and repair contracts, and failure-finding intervals. These strong industry connections not only benefit the companies it works with, but also, it's graduate students, who find work in maintenance divisions of industry leaders after graduation.

The event started with a very up-close tour of the energy lab, the mirco robotics and finished off with a visit to the robotics and mechatronics lab. Our tour guide Pan was a wealth of knowledge, and participants were able to see projects in the labs and join in on some of the experiments themselves. The walking tour ended with a visit to the brand new C-MORE building that was completed six months ago. 

Following the tour participants heard from GTA Chapter Executive members Gregg Bentley, Plant Manager at Durisol & Erika Mazza, CMMS - Asset Data Management for the Regional Municipality of Durham, who provided an update on the chapter and PEMAC initiatives. We also welcomed three guest speakers from the university. Janet Lam (Phd.) is the Assistant Director for C-MORE at the University of Toronto, and she shared insights into real world applications of reliability and maintenance engineering. Kuilin Chen from the University of Toronto spoke about Developing a digital twin of a reheat furnace in steel manufacturing. And lastly, the Director of C-MORE, Chi-Guhn Lee (Phd), share his tremendous insights into Machine learning approaches for maintenance, repair, and operations.

The evening ended with a dinner and networking event hosted in the innovative C-MORE student space.
