PEMAC NEWS RELEASE
MISSISSAUGA, (October 8, 2019) – PEMAC recognized the outstanding achievements of this year’s award winners during the 2019 PEMAC Awards Banquet that was hosted in Edmonton during the MainTrain conference held in late September. Practitioners were honoured for the Best MMP Capstone Project in both the technical and business process category; the Best AMP Capstone Project, as well as the Maintenance Team of the year and the Sergio Guy awards.
The Capstone awards, launched in 2013, now recognizes excellence in both the Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) Program and the Asset Management Professional (AMP) Program. These education programs, focus on the tools, techniques, strategies and skills necessary for effective maintenance and asset management of a business’s physical assets. Both programs consist of courses that bring participants through key learnings and immediate application to their organizations learning journey, culminating in: The Capstone Project. The Capstone Awards were created to encourage and recognize excellence in program participation as demonstrated through outstanding Capstone projects.
The 2019 Best MMP Capstone Project: Technical Focus was awarded to Mimi Ginger Wilde. Based in Ontario, Mimi is a system engineer at the Chalk River Powerhouse of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories. She completed the MMP Program earlier this year through Northern Lakes College, submitting a project on: Powerhouse Steam Trap Maintenance.
“Mimi’s MMP Capstone was an excellent technical improvement project that not only incorporated all of the appropriate concepts from the program, but also provided Canadian Nuclear Laboratories with a viable solution to improve system health across the Chalk River Powerhouse site and beyond,” reports Al Johnson, retired Maintenance Management Consultant, and one of Mimi’s instructors.
The 2019 Best MMP Capstone Project: Business Focus award was presented to a team project submitted by Jeff Dumont, Plant Maintenance Supervisor and Michael Stewart, Technical Assistant, at the City of Calgary Transit who completed the program through Bow Valley College. Their project focused on improving level of service and keeping Calgary Transit customers moving, by proposing a solution that would increase the availability of the escalators at the LRT stations and other facilities.
“This final Capstone project addresses a real opportunity for Calgary Transit by aligning directly to the organization’s objectives for safe, reliable, cost-effective and accessible transportation. The specific project to improve availability of escalators at Calgary Transit LRT Stations and facilities demonstrates the learnings over the entire MMP certification program, and when implemented will have a return on investment well within the next budget cycle,” shares Susan Lubell, and one of Jeff and Michael’s MMP module 8 instructors.
PEMAC also presented the second annual, 2019 Best AMP Capstone Project award to Mark Boomer, a Planning Supervisor at Fort Nelson and McMahon Gas Plant with Enbridge. Graduating from Humber College, Mark’s project focused on the strategic asset management for a new organization, North River Midstream, pulling from his learnings in the AMP program, as an employee of Enbridge Inc. formally Spectra Energy.
In his project, Mark identified that an integrated asset management strategy and a combination of efforts is essential to an effective asset management plan, sharing that adoption of the strategy and plan from the top of the organization is essential to ensure success. “Mark’s project took a holistic view of asset management, encompassing all of the areas that impact and influence an organization’s asset management program. Focusing on strategic asset management at Spectra Energy, this project is a perfect example of complete alignment across the organization in driving value,” shares Cliff Williams, Maintenance Manager at ERCO Worldwide and AMP instructor.
Also awarded during the event was the Sergio Guy Award that recognizes the efforts of an individual who has made significant contributions to both the maintenance and asset management profession, the association and its members. This prestigious award has acknowledged the outstanding achievements of many professionals – maintenance managers, professional writers, educators, and consultants – all of whom have exemplified excellence. This year’s Sergio Guy Award was bestowed upon Edith Mackenzie, Senior Liaison, Continuing Education & Corporate Training group at Northern Lakes College for her outstanding dedication to furthering the alignment of professional training to match the needs of the current learning landscape across Canada.
“We are pleased to honour Edith Mackenzie this year and applaud her contributions towards the improvement of the profession. Edith possesses many of the same principles of Sergio, including a hard-working commitment and contributions to the profession by working with companies to address the specific needs within their organizations. Edith has been integral in the process of coordinating continuing education and corporate training both online and onsite offerings of MMP and AMP. In her role, she supports the public by connecting them to the education needed to meet the demands of the current workforce across Canada,” shares Susan Lubell, President, PEMACs Board of Directors.
The final award of the evening was presented to the Maintenance Team of the Year. This year PEMAC honoured Edmonton Airports, and it’s maintenance team of over 150 professionals. The airport’s distinguished and continuous improvement efforts that have brought it to an astounding point in their advancement journey. The team submitted an application for the award on the premise of two points of improvements: first the airport initiated work on a maintenance improvement plan which is on schedule and second, it undertook a structural reorganization for effectiveness and efficiency.
“We have an integrated maintenance management system with a clear line of sight to the performance, cost and resourcing requirements for all of Edmonton Airports infrastructure assets. Our people are engaged and have the information at hand to make informed decisions,” says Nick Jensen, Director, Asset Management at Edmonton Airports. These along with other strategic changes have placed the Edmonton Airport in a strong position to accomplish the goals of its current five and ten year strategic plans.
PEMAC congratulates all of this year’s award winners!
