Topic: Setting up an Asset Management Program, in a traditional maintenance environment
Speaker: Tony McWhannel, P. Eng, MBA
General Manager, Slave Lake Pulp, a division of West Fraser
Several years ago West Fraser found that reliability was costing the plant many millions of dollars per year in its Eurocan mill. The plant was 50 years old, had over 500 employees and competed on the global market. Pulp mills compete in a mature industry where profit margins are thin and continuous improvement is imperative. The mill had a traditional maintenance department, with an added and growing reliability team. However, plant reliability did not improve sufficiently. Regardless of the reliability team’s effort, plant uptime was unaffected. In this presentation you will hear first-hand how the organization reassessed and created a dedicated Core Reliability Team. The team was cross functional and worked independently from the existing maintenance department. The team reviewed statistics, mill performance and root cause investigations. They decided to dedicate their efforts to one area of the plant and build a new reliability program, called Asset Care. The results were improved uptime, lower costs and a new maintenance culture. Tony will share insights gained with West Fraser’s experience, and demonstrate how you can improve your organization's reliability..
