Surprisingly rotating equipment operating under misaligned conditions still seems to be the most thorn in the side of many industrial maintenance managers. Again and again vibration analysts come back with diagnosis of misalignment on rotating equipment. How is it that after the industrial revolution misalignment is still the most common cause to premature failure and unscheduled downtime? In this presentation you will see how it can easily be avoided. We will discuss the benefits of having a proactive maintenance strategy and the necessary tools and skill sets for keeping machines in line and online. Questions from the participants will be welcome to get to the bottom of their own misalignment scenarios.

In 2012, Water launched a comprehensive program (Secondary Water Supply Facilities Rehabilitation Program) which included assessing the condition of 18 pump stations. The results of this program ranked the Shaganappi Pump Station as the most critical based on the condition of the equipment, the relatively large population and number of critical institutions it services. In this session you will learn how this pump station effectively implemented a condition-based maintenance strategy, and how you can utilize some of the learnings in your own environment to minimize and control risk, and create an effective infrastructure.

In this session you will learn about faster identification of defects at all stages of the asset life cycle, and about clearer and more effective mechanisms for preventing equipment defects at each stage in cycle. In addition you will discover how organizations implement better triggering mechanisms for initiating root cause analysis and integrate a business process and information linkages model. You will have a better understanding of different root cause analysis techniques, as well as data inputs and outputs for defect elimination.

In today’s climate of steadily increasing energy prices, poor control of motor efficiency has significant costs that are often “invisible” and uncontrolled. A motor management plan that has buy-in from all affected stakeholders will help realize the full value of your motor asset while saving energy, reducing downtime, lowering operating cost and lessening your “anxiety costs”. In this session review the evolution of motor efficiency and discuss why operating cost needs to be the basis for selecting a new motor versus only the initial purchase price. Learn from cases that illustrate the significant benefits of higher efficiency motors and motor selection tools available.

Too often organizations are blinded by latest dash-boards, graphics and walls posted with too many Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). In most cases these do not mean much for the people who can impact those numbers. Driving, or leading, KPIs need to be as closely related to actions people can influence as possible. Results, or lagging indicators, are the outcome of how well driving indicators are done. In this session we will discuss what driving indicators should be used in a reactive organization that starts their journey towards a controlled and continuously improving organization as well as indicators used in a mature reliability driven organization.

In 2012, Union Gas – Storage & Transmission Operations (STO) engaged in an improvement initiative called Maintenance Excellence. The motive for engaging in this initiative was the desire to identify and address underlying workforce productivity and reliability issues as well as concerns which remained transparent as STO continued to meet customer demands. This presentation is about Union Gas’ journey from its beginnings in 2012 to its current state today as they continue to pursue Maintenance Excellence. During this session we will discuss Union Gas Storage and Transmission Operations’ journey into Maintenance Excellence. Learn to move from an organization with little documented process and heavy reliance on tribal knowledge to one organized around strong work management processes with the structure to support this. This session will discuss key transformation considerations related to structure, change management and performance measurement.

There is “hidden” money available in most companies’ invested MRO (spare parts) inventory. It is not difficult to identify that inventory, but one must understand how it got there and how to avoid it “rebuilding” itself in order to take full advantage of the dollars that can be saved and spending that can be further avoided. This presentation will cover those key elements and also discuss, in detail, the nine phases of the MRO Lifecycle that one has to fully understand in order to take advantage of this savings potential. Use of a state-of-the-art CMMS/EAM system is paramount in collecting the right data to make the right decisions.

With over 100 years of transmission and distribution experience in Calgary, ENMAX has only been in the power generation business for a few years following the acquisition of the Shepard Energy Centre (SEC). The addition of SEC has doubled the generation operated portfolio for ENMAX requiring significant work to ensure the facility conforms to the company’s Operations and Maintenance programs. This presentation will describe various integration strategies that ENMAX undertook including: building an organizational design to fit with the asset use plan; identifying all individual assets and use a structured approach for risk assessment and maintenance recommendations; developing spare parts purchasing plan based using risk based methodology; establish complete regulatory compliance program and EHS procedures and systems; and integrating everything into ENMAX’s existing systems. This presentation will explore both the challenges and benefits of this major endeavor.

The Sheerness Generating Station, a large power plant, has process and machine health data feeding into the DCS and plant historian database continuously from thousands of field sensing elements. This session is a case study of project at the plant that utilized ‘cloud’ technology to stream data about plant performance and initial equipment failures not yet notified by the Alarm Management System, to technical experts, who analyzed the information and communicated the findings back to the plant for further troubleshooting, validation and correction. The session will describe the data security and connectivity issues, the communication protocols and the benefits observed. If you are considering changes in the collection, analysis, and reporting of your own plant performance and equipment health, this session will be useful.
