As our organization recently embarked on a digital transformation of our work management processes, it became obvious that what we were actually changing wasn’t just the technology we used—we also had to change our people. We recognized that this change was too big and too important to leave to chance and decided instead to apply a structured, methodical, and deliberate approach. This is a case study in the approach we took and the tools we used to ensure the changes required of our workforce were as painless as possible. We’ll outline how the approach impacted our success and detail the lessons learned. We’ll demonstrate how we approached the following topics: assessing the scope of change, analysis of gaps between present and future states, planning for change, change methodology (ADKAR), roles and responsibilities, where does change fit into project planning, communications, building desire for change, assessment of your change audience, building the knowledge and skills of your audience, and monitoring change progress. The intent of this study is to demonstrate some techniques and tools you can apply to any changes being undertaken, with the hope that you can help to “grease the wheels” of change within your own organization.

Enbridge Liquids Pipelines is at the midpoint of a multi-year journey to advance the M&R program for its electrical and mechanical assets. This presentation will share successes and challenges while aiming to apply M&R best practices to a midstream pipeline operator. Our initiative will improve M&R processes and culture, with a focus on improving multiple work streams. These include the planning, scheduling, and execution of preventative and predictive maintenance, information management, spare parts, and CMMS use.

Oftentimes, maintenance is left to suffer the consequences of otherwise “successfully” completed and handed-over projects. While project teams are more interested in the project constraints of scope, time, and cost at handover, maintenance is concerned with maintainability, reliability, availability, cost, and safety for the duration of the asset lifecycle. This conflict is not often given due consideration, and maintenance is often brought into the team long after the asset has been commissioned and handed over to operations. This presentation will make a strong case for including maintenance at all stages of a project—a case for maintenance readiness. It describes the slowly changing paradigm shift and acceptance (albeit lukewarm) of operations readiness, with no corresponding consideration to maintenance readiness. It uses real-life examples to show that the "cost savings" from not including maintenance in projects is mostly eroded in the first few months of the asset lifecycle. We'll make the case for a paradigm shift toward including maintenance readiness to all projects. Inserting the maintenance team in all the project phases will not only improve asset availability, reliability, and lifecycle cost, but also enhance cross-functional team synergy and professionalism, and ultimately reduce this stress element from maintenance.

Airports are an important economic hub for a region. They help regional economies extend their reach and often create a localized cluster of companies around it, termed “airport cities.” Indeed, airports face many of the same challenges that municipalities do. They have a portfolio of diverse infrastructure that supports a variety of services to customers in a challenging, dynamic environment. There are many stakeholders who have an interest in service levels, and revenues are often less than what is required to meet expectations. Edmonton International Airport (EIA) has implemented an asset management program that began with the successful implementation of a computerized maintenance management system to better understand its cost of service. It has also recently established an asset management strategy that systematically employs risk, strategic goals, and service priority for investment decision-making. This presentation will provide a case study of EIA's progress to date as well as future steps.

Any plant, in order to maximize its production, must have a world-class maintenance team that takes care of every single piece of equipment in the field. Maintenance teams could be considered the superheroes of any plant, since they must always maintain and return the equipment in the fastest and most efficient way. Wrench time is the actual time a maintenance crew works on a piece of equipment, and wrench time analysis is used to measure the maintenance team's effectiveness. Many companies apply wrench time for a very limited time and do not go for a continuous way of study. This presentation will show a self-reporting wrench time case study that was implemented in a Saudi Arabian petrochemical plant. We'll aim to explore the effect of self-reporting wrench time and answer the following three questions: Does wrench time analysis increase maintenance efficiency? Does self-reporting wrench time lead to better maintenance efficiency? What is the impact of self-reporting wrench time on maintenance team performance?

Early in 2018, the City of Edmonton adopted an Infrastructure Asset Management Policy to provide clear direction for how the organization should carry out asset management activities to achieve its vision, goal, and objectives. Infrastructure maintenance at the Parks and Roads Services Branch is accountable for all the actions necessary. In order to comply with the recently adopted policy, the branch developed an asset maintenance framework that would allow the section to not only align its practices to the adopted policy but also enable it to manage resource allocation; define clear accountability for financial results as well as for level of services delivered to citizens; and set the foundation for a management system that will allow performance-based reporting on how the execution of the different types of maintenance activities defined in each asset maintenance plan are supporting the expected asset condition levels targeted by the administration.

Metrics, best practices, more than 40 key elements to implement, challenges, and opportunities all combine to make a successful implementation difficult. Where do you start, and how do you know how to work on what matters? Once you understand how it’s all related, you can focus on the vital few to leverage the maximum ROI. This presentation will clarify the importance of culture and employee engagement, along with other key plant floor performance indicators that will be clarified with data. We'll look at the current state of R&M; what’s working and what's not; survival skills for the next decade; impacts of connected technologies (edge computing, big data, machine learning, AI, 3D printing, augmented reality); the importance of getting your data ready for what's coming next; and relationships between R&M and safety, people engagement, quality, throughput/uptime, and cost.

This case study will show how we used an analysis of standard work management metrics and a systematic approach to identify opportunities to improve our plant. We'll provide specific examples of how we developed and implemented the approach and the results we achieved. We'll also describe the fundamental understanding and steps that could be taken to implement a similar approach at any plant, or for any particular metric. Topics will include cultural recognition of KPIs as an improvement tool, not a personnel measurement stick; understanding all the various causes and influences on any particular metric; analysis and categorization of deviations; identifying losses as acute one-offs vs. chronic systemic issues; behavioural vs. procedural issues; understanding change/improvement requirements, what can be directly controlled and what can be only influenced; determining corrective actions; and tracking the resulting improvements. Specific examples will be derived from our site's application of this methodology to schedule compliance, PM/PdM compliance, and emergency work metrics.
