At the recent Maintrain conference in Edmonton, we held the Alberta Chapter elections. We have great representation across industries and western Canada. Susan Lubell, P.Eng, MBA, MMP (President)
Manager Production Systems Asset Integrity Management, PennWest Exploration

Susan has recently (Dec 2011) joined PennWest Exploration in the role of Manager Production Systems Asset Integrity Management. In this new role, she will be responsible for creating, implementing and managing production asset integrity strategies and plans.

Susan completed her degree in Chemical Engineering at Queen's University (Kingston) and moved to Ft McMurray to work for Syncrude in their oilsands upgrader operations as a Process Engineer. Following completion of her MBA at the University of Calgary, she worked for Imperial Oil as a Project Engineer for their Cold Lake heavy oil facility. Sue then spent several years consulting for various oil & gas clients with PwC Consulting until she joined EnCana in 2004. Susan held a number of roles within EnCana's Facility Asset Management Team. Her main focus was on reliability engineering, developing and implementing strategic cost effective maintenance programs, developing and delivering technical training, and identifying and implementing opportunities to improve equipment maintenance and engineering practices through collaboration across EnCana's many field locations in northern Alberta and British Columbia. She is a certified RCM facilitator and in 2007, completed her PEMAC Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) certification. She now teaches in the MMP program for both Northern Lakes College and Bow Valley College and was elected President of the Alberta Chapter of PEMAC in Sept 2011.

Steve Kay (Vice-President)
E&I Superintendent, Slave Lake Pulp West Fraser Mills 

Steve Kay started his maintenance career in the UK as an Apprentice Electrician with the National Coal Board in 1972. He completed engineering courses and qualified as a Technician with the Certified Engineers Institute. He emigrated to Canada in 1979 to work for McIntyre Mines in Grande Cache, Alberta initially as an underground mine electrician then transferring to the Surface Mine and later holding roles as Electrical Training Officer and Industrial Relations Officer.

In 1989 Steve changed industries and worked for Daishowa - Marubeni, Peace River Pulp in Peace River Alberta. Starting as an Electrical & Instrumentation Technician in the greenfield operation and 8 years later as the Electrical & Instrumentation Superintendent. He then moved to Powell River, BC to work for MacMillan Bloedel as Central Maintenance Superintendent involved in setting up Planning and Scheduling and the CMMS system. After 3 years he returned to Peace River to assist in the implementation of their new CMMS and later became Manager of Central Maintenance and Procurement.

In 2006 a change to the Oriented Strand Board industry as Maintenance & Engineering Manager in High Level, AB until the closure of the Mill in late 2007 due to poor market conditions in the US housing market. Currently he is employed with West Fraser at their Slave Lake Pulp Mill in Alberta as Electrical & Instrumentation Superintendent and was recently elected Vice-President of the Alberta Chapter of PEMAC.

Dennis Heinzlmeir, P.Eng (Secretary-Treasurer)
Business Manager, Jacobs Industrial Services

Dennis is currently the Business Manager for Jacobs Industrial Services at the Nexen Long Lake site.  He lives with his family in Fort McMurray.  He has been with Jacobs for 12 years, 7 of those years in Fort McMurray involving various maintenance roles.  He has over 25 years of maintenance, EPC, training and management consulting experience.  Dennis graduated from the University of Calgary with a B.Sc. in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering.  He is currently a member of APEGGA and served on the board of many associations when he lived in Calgary, such as the Canadian Gas Processors and Suppliers Association, American Society for Quality, Canadian Institute of Energy, and the Cochrane Environment & Management Advisory Committee.  Dennis is a Director of the PEMAC Fort McMurray Chapter as well as serving as the secretary and treasurer for the PEMAC Alberta Chapter.

Alan (Al) Johnson (Past-President)
Consultant, Physical Asset Management, Clearpass Inc.

Alan has close to 40 years of experience as a Journeyman Tradesman and as a Supervisor in maintenance, operations, and construction in Oil and Gas Production and Processing. He is currently a member of the Clearpass Inc. group of consultants; a Calgary based consulting firm specializing in assisting clients with managing their physical assets.

During his 16 years as a consultant, his clients have included; Forest Products and Pulp and Paper operations, Fertilizer production, Mining, Oil & Gas producers, and a number of other process industries. His primary areas of focus have been; assessment of Asset Management Program effectiveness & CMMS utilization, and aiding clients in the development and implementation of improvement strategies and action plans in both areas.

Alan has worked with numerous clients conducting workshops and providing on site mentoring in maintenance work management, providing assistance with establishing planning and scheduling practices, planned maintenance (preventive, predictive, proactive) program development and utilization of CMMS tools to support planned maintenance activities.

Alan is an active member of the Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada (PEMAC). Alan is also an instructor in the PEMAC Maintenance Management Professional certification program at several Alberta colleges.

Reg Belyea, P.Eng (Member-at-Large)
Business Development, Sureway Construction

Reg Belyea was born in Saint John, New Brunswick. After graduating from high school he attended the University of New Brunswick receiving a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (1977). Reg is presently the BDO for the Sureway Construction Group of Companies, a heavy civil industrial general contracting company that also specializes in public infrastructure and renewal.

A large portion of Reg’s career (30 years) was spent within the consulting engineering and construction service industry, both domestically and internationally, focusing on midsize to large CAPEX and O&M Brownfield and Greenfield Industrial ( Upstream and Downstream O&G, Power, pipeline, Midstream O&G, P&P) projects. This varied experience has provided Reg with extensive hands-on exposure to various O&M standards and reliability & maintenance best practices, infrastructure design and construction. His expertise has been utilized extensively while participating on a multitude of technical & industry associations such as PEMAC, COAA, and RISA.

Paul Kristensen, P.Eng (Member-at-Large)
Vice President Operations, AltaSteel

Paul Kristensen is the Vice President, Operations for AltaSteel Ltd. a OneSteel group company based in Australia with business units around the world.

Paul joined AltaSteel in November 2008 as the Maintenance Manager but since April 2009 has been leading the Operations Team in their effort to integrate new maintenance and operations business processes in a drive to improve overall operational performance.

Paul has 20 years of varied plant maintenance and operations experience, working in all aspects of asset management in both technical and managerial roles. His career began in the petrochemical and oil industry. The change to the steel manufacturing industry is providing opportunities for new challenges in applying the fundamental principles of operational excellence.

Paul is a Mechanical Engineer, receiving his B.Sc. from the University of Alberta and is currently a professional engineer registered with APEGGA.

Kendal Martens, P.Eng (Member-at-Large)
Water Treatment Maintenance Planning Leader, Water Services, The City of Calgary

Kendal has worked at the City of Calgary for over 18 years in the operations and maintenance of both water and wastewater treatment facilities.  His current role involves leading the Maintenance Planning group responsible for planning, coordinating, and scheduling operations and maintenance work activities for the Water Treatment Plants.  Other areas of work experience include: asset inventory projects; the selection, implementation, operation and utilization of different Work and Asset Management applications (CMMS); Preventive Maintenance Optimization projects; Asset Management best practices; work management business process re-design; and mentoring.

Greg McCuaig, MMP (Member-at-Large)
Group Lead Maintenance & Reliability System Support, Cenovus  Energy

Greg has worked at Cenovus (through mergers and split companies of PanCanadian and EnCana) for the last 25 years in a number of roles. He started as an operator working in the shallow gas fields of southern Alberta and then moved into conventional oil with related processing equipment. As part of a career change, Greg shifted to desktop computer support for a few years before taking a role as the Maintenance Planner in central Alberta. When the merger of AEC and PanCanadian transpired, he moved into Calgary to support Corporate Supply Chain Management, and quickly there after went on to support the company’s CMMS tool JDE. After the split of EnCana in December 2009, he took on his current role as Group Lead Maintenance & Reliability System Support for Cenovus. Greg’s is currently focused on the implementation of IBM's Maximo tool. His broad field experience continues to helped him provide maintenance management and business process support to field staff across Cenovus. Greg completed the PEMAC MMP certification in 2009.

Ray Osborne, MMP (Member-at-Large)
Operations Manager & CRT, Northern Utility Maintenance

Ray is the Operations Manager and a CRT (Circuit Rider Trainer) for Northern Utility Maintenance. Northern Utility Maintenance provides CRT services to 17 First Nation communities in the Yukon and northern BC. They also provide consulting services in the field of operations maintenance and asset management in municipal water and wastewater.

Ray started his career as a heavy equipment mechanic/millwright in the mining field. He has held positions in the field of Adult Education at Yukon College and Northern Utility Maintenance. Ray has over 20 years’ experience in the municipal water and wastewater operations and maintenance field.

Ray graduated the MMP program in 2009, Holds an interprovincial red seal in heavy equipment mechanics, along with a number of operator certifications in the water and wastewater field through Environmental Operators Certification Program. Ray has served on the executive of the Yukon Water and Wastewater Association, and currently holds a Director's position on the National Executive for the Circuit Rider Trainer Professional Association.

Claire Russell (Member-at-Large)
Resource Programs Coordinator, Northern Lakes College

Claire brings over 17 years of experience in Oriented Strandboard Mills as Human 
Resource Coordinator, Office Manager, Safety Manager, Process Reliability Manager and Area Team Leader. More recently, as a Resource Programs Coordinator at Northern Lakes College, Claire’s areas of responsibility include coordinating the Power Engineering and Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) Educational and Certification Programs for Northern Lakes College. In 2009, Claire was a recipient of the Sergio Guy award presented by PEMAC.

Devan Sieben, MMP (Member-at-Large)
Production Foreman, Talisman Energy

Devan is a Journeyman Millwright and an MMP graduate. He works for Talisman Energy Inc in Edson Alberta. He is currently working in the role of Production Foremen Whitecourt. Some of his most recent accomplishments include the implementation of lean methodologies to Natural Gas Compression maintenance. They have successfully reduced the cycle time of a number of major maintenance events, some by > 50%. Devan has stepped outside of his roots and has ventured into a role within operations where he has lead his team to grow there business with no drilling program. They accomplished this through operator round optimization efforts and Human Performance engineering. Devan is an active instructor in the MMP program.
