ISO 5500X Standards Will Be Available for Purchase Soon

The three new Standards: ISO 55000 / 55001 / 55002 have all been approved by the international community. It was announced by the chairperson at the IMC conference in December that the standard documents should be published this month, January 2014.

These standards will create a publicly available document for organizations to use as a guideline as they consider principles and policies that will help them achieve excellence in Asset Management. Maintenance Management is one of the critical functions within the umbrella of Asset Management and as organizations begin to take an interest in their Asset Management performance our members are in an excellent position to assist. It is important for us to realize, however, that maintenance management and asset management are not synonymous. As the ISO becomes available for purchase we would like to encourage MMPs across the country and around the world to invest in copies of all three documents (ISO 55000, 55001 and 55002) and to study them carefully.

Our Board of Directors believes that the attention that the Asset Management discussion will be getting at senior levels in organizations as the ISO is published is very good for our members and for our member organizations. It falls in line with the vision and mission of our association, and it is encumbant upon us as professionals to do our best to study this development and to continue contribute to it as we learn. The Board believes that it is also important for our members, in their day to day work, to be able to discuss the critical significance of maintenance within the context of the asset management strategy of the organization they serve and to be clear that maintenance management is directly related to, but not the same subject as asset management. Going forward we need to be watchful and not make the (common) mistake of 're-badging' maintenance management as asset management. A different thing is intended by this term and the ISO has a much broader, silo-defying intention.
